What is web hosting?

Web hosting is the process of renting space and bandwidth through a company so that your website will be online. It means that you can publish your website so that anybody in the world can visit your website on the Web. You can either pay a web hosting company for your website hosting or you can opt for free hosting. If you go for free hosting then you will have banner ads or pop-ups on your website. If you pay you will have no adverts and will be in complete control of your website.

What is data transfer or bandwidth traffic? How does a traffic limit fit into this?

Data transfer or bandwidth is the amount of information that your visitors download from your site. Each time someone visits your site the information contained on your website is transferred from the web server to your visitors computer over their internet connection. For example let’s assume the following: each of your visitors view 4 HTML pages each visit; your HTML pages (including images) average 30 KB each; you get 500 visitors each week. Your site will then transfer 60 000 KB (4 x 30 x 500) each week (i.e. 60 MB per week). A monthly traffic limit is the amount of data or bandwidth that you are allowed to transfer in any given month. Generally if you reach your traffic limit your site will either become unavailable until the beginning of the next month or you will be charged for each MB of traffic that you move over and above your traffic limit

What is uptime?

Uptime is the amount of time that your website is available and online throughout the month. Thus if your website has 100% uptime it means that your site was not down for any time throughout the month. If your site was down for a total of 45 minutes in the month then your uptime was approximately 99.9%.

What Is Shared Hosting

In a shared hosting environment multiple web sites are served through a single server. Shared hosting is the most common method of hosting sites for small-to-medium size users with light to moderate Web traffic.

What Is Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transmitted at a given moment to a server. The higher your bandwidth, the larger amount of traffic your site can handle at one time.

Is Unlimited Bandwidth Possible

No. Offering unlimited bandwidth or disk space is simply not possible as all hardware has limitations.

What¹s the difference between web design and web development?

Web design is the process of creating a look and feel for a website. Web development looks beyond this to the functionality and is concerned with questions like: how user friendly is it? Does it serve its primary purpose? How good is the content? Does it draw and keep visitors? Does it evoke the required action? Is it search-engine friendly? Web design on its own can in fact be hugely detrimental to a site¹s objectives. A good website takes many factors into consideration and not just the first impression or visual effect.

What is VoIP?

VoIP technology enables you to make and receive telephone calls over a broadband Internet connection instead of over a traditional phone line.

How Does it Work?

With VoIP, voice traffic is converted into data packets and transmitted over the public Internet and/or over a private IP network. When you call a landline or cell phone number, the data packets are converted to a regular telephone signal before they reach the party you’re calling.

How is it Different from Unified Communications?

VoIP refers to a basic Internet-based telephony system. Unified communications is more advanced. Among unified communications’ many advantages are sophisticated call center features; conferencing that combines voice, data, video and desktop sharing; and presence—the ability to instantly determine the availability of others within your company

What Equipment Do I Need?

For a basic VoIP system, all you need are a broadband Internet connection and a VoIP-enabled phone; a traditional phone connected to an adapter; or a computer with VoIP software. Many businesses are now using VoIP and unified communications on their own private networks. Telephony systems residing on private networks have better security and quality than those that operate strictly over the public Internet. With VoIP or unified communications on a private network, you can prioritize voice over other types of traffic on your network, to ensure the best possible audio quality.

What is ADSL?

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a high-speed Internet access service that uses your telephone line to send and receive Internet data at much faster speeds than a conventional dial-up connection. With ADSL you are connected to the Internet 24 hours a day (“Always On”). You no longer need to dial up to open your Internet connection. You can also make and receive telephone calls while online. This is because the ADSL signal operates on a digital frequency, while the voice signals (telephone conversation), operate on an analogue frequency. Voice data and Internet data can, therefore, travel along the line simultaneously. The “asymmetric” in ADSL refers to the fact that the data being received by your computer from the Internet (downstream data / downloading), travels at a faster speed than data travelling from your computer to the Internet (upstream data / uploading).

How does ADSL Work?

The telephone system was originally designed to carry the human voice along copper telephone wires. The sound of your voice is converted into small electric pulses which travel along the telephone wires. These electric pulses are then converted back into sound at the other end, so the other person can hear you. This happens in both directions so you can have a conversation.

How do I Know if I Need ADSL?

If you only ever come online once a week, ADSL is probably not necessary for you. If, however, you regularly find that your connection is too slow for you to do what you want to do in the time you have available, or if you spend lots of time online – perhaps you work from home – then it’s very much worth investigating further. If you’re an online gamer, then why are you still here?

Is ADSL Available in My Area?

Access to ADSL is only possible if the telephone exchange supports ADSL, i.e. it must be ADSL enabled. To find out if ADSL is available in your area, register with us and we will confirm your avaialability and speed.. Soon all you have to do is enter your telephone number and the Checker will tell you if ADSL is enabled in your area. If ADSL is not possible, then Wireless or 3G/HSDPA and Lte might be the solution for you. Check out our Wireless and 3G / HSDPA / Lte packages.

How Fast is ADSL?

ADSL is fast. The basic provision in South Africa is 2 Megabits per second downstream and 384 kbits per second upstream. Compared to a dial-up modem, which does 33kbits per second upstream and (in theory) can do 64kbits per second downstream, ADSL is up to thirty two times faster. That means that a large download that might take ten minutes on a dial-up modem will happen in around a minute on ADSL
